German Cockroach

Let’s start with the most common little buddy, the German Cockroach.

Features

It has a slim, light brown body and two black lines along its back compared to its length of 1 cm to 1.6 cm. The younger ones nymphs, they’re called are a little darker with those same stripes. They have a pointed back and wings, but don’t panic, they would rather run around than fly!

Where to Find Them

These roaches are often found in wet locations such as kitchens (roaches love food!), garbage cans, under sinks and bathrooms, particularly in warm and damp areas.

Family Life

A female German Cockroach can deliver up to 35 babies at a time, and can lay 30,000 eggs in a single year! Their life span is around 6 to 9 months.

Droppings

Look out for small, dark spots that resemble pepper or coffee grounds. You might see these along the tops of doors, in the corners of rooms, and in tiny cracks in the walls.

Odor

They give off a mild, musty smell.

American Cockroach

Next up, we have the larger cousin, the American Cockroach.

Features: It is a 4 cm long reddish-brown body with a great yellowish margin. They are amazing fliers and can  glide right into your house!

Where to Find Them: They love the outdoors but will venture into your home in cold weather. You might discover them in basements or close to drains.

Family Life: A female can carry 12 little roaches in her egg case, and they can produce roughly 800 babies a year and live for 1 to 1.5 years.

Droppings: Their excrement is small and dark like pepper or coffee grounds and has a rounded end with ridges along the sides.

Australian Cockroach

Say hello to the Australian Cockroach (Periplaneta Australasiae), another large tropical roach!

Features: This roach is a reddish-brown to dark brown colour with an adorable yellow band at its head and a size of 2 cm to 3.5 cm. They’re brilliant at flying, so be careful!

Where to Find Them: Outdoors on tree bark or piles of firewood, and indoors in wet, dark areas such as in water pipes and sinks.

Family Life: She bears 12 to 30 offspring, which compact in about 40 days, and she can give birth to about 30 young people a year. They last approximately 4 to 6 months.

Droppings: Similar to their cousins, they produce small dark spots that resemble pepper or coffee grounds and make smear marks at times.

Oriental Cockroach  Black

Finally, here is the Oriental Cockroach you may also know it as the water bug or the black beetle (Blatta Orientalis).

Features: These fellows are dark brown or black with shiny bodies. Females are 2 cm to 2.7 cm and males are slightly smaller, measuring 1.8 cm to 2.9 cm. Neither one can fly, which is a small relief!

Where to Find Them: You’ll likely find these roaches in the dark, damp places around your home, including drains, sewers and other moist areas outdoors.

Family Life: Females can carry 16 to 18 eggs in their egg cases, and can lay 8 to 16 cases each year. It takes them a time period of about 42 to 81 days to hatch, and their life span is around 1 to 1.5 years. Elongate Oriental roaches generally emerge in spring, and you can expect to see them in comfortable numbers by late spring!

Droppings: Their droppings look like small grains of rice and form little cylinders with rounded ends that might sometimes be confused with rat droppings.
