Spiders Linger in Morley!

January 26, 20253 min read

Imagine you’re sitting on your front porch soaking up the sun when a spider the size of a dinner plate races across your lawn. Yikes! Maybe you scream a bit or yell so your family runs outside to see how you are doing. And while this may seem like the stuff of horror movies, it’s happening more often as huntsman spiders infiltrate suburban areas throughout Australia. As our cities grow and develop, these wonderful (if rather large!) spiders are increasingly emerging when we go outside.

What’s a Huntsman Spider, Anyway?

Huntsman spiders are large and hairy and they are native to Australia. You can see them in suburbs often, and they get a little bit of a bad rap  they aren’t as scary as they sound! These critters can get to be about 15cm long, and while some people consider them to be among the most dangerous, they really would rather just be left alone and avoid the fight.

Why Do They Look So Big and Hairy?

You might think huntsman spiders are a bit rough around the edges, but their size and appearance serve a purpose! Scientists believe that being larger helps them avoid predators, and their dark coloring allows them to blend into their surroundings. So, while they may not win any beauty contests, their unique look helps them thrive in the wild!

What Do They Look Like?

Huntsman spiders are often referred to as Giant Crab Spiders, and they’re quite the sight! With their brown or grey color and long legs adorned with a chevron pattern on their abdomen, they can grow impressively large. While they can deliver a painful bite if provoked, they’re generally friendly and harmless. If you happen to find one indoors, it’s best to gently catch it and release it outside.

How Can I Spot a Huntsman Spider?

The most prevalent type in Sydney is the Giant Huntsman Spider. The spiders are big and brown with a flat body and long legs, and like to hang out in gardens and homes. If you believe you’ve seen one, here’s how to confirm:

1. Check the Eyes: If you’re feeling brave, look at their eyes! Huntsman spiders have two big ones in front, while other spiders typically have eight smaller ones.

2.  Body Shape: They have broad, flat bodies, unlike the rounder shapes of other spiders.

3.  Legs: Their long legs are usually much bigger than their body, giving them a distinct look.

If you’re still not sure, you can snap a few photos and consult with a helpful friend or you can always ask an expert!

Where Do They Hide?

Huntsman spiders enjoy hiding in warm places both indoors and outdoors around your home. They may be lurking under furniture, in closets or down in the basement. Outdoors, they love gardens, sheds, and garages.

What Should I Do If I Spot One?

It is worth stating that in the event a huntsman spider encounters its way into your house or garden, the best thing to do is to leave it alone! They are not aggressive and will bite only when provoked. In case you need to shift it, gently cover it with a cup or a container and stick something beneath it, for example, card board bit to catch it. Then you can liberate it outside.

Keeping Your Space Cozy

For many people, spiders (especially the huntsman variety) can be a bit off-putting. There are no harm’s some keeping them out of your sleeping areas.

If You See One, Stay Calm

If you find one of the above-mentioned spiders indoors, take a deep breath! These little fellas are actually quite beneficial because they keep other insect populations in check. And if you’d rather not share your space with one, simply call in a pest control pro to help!
