Silverfish
What Do Silverfish Look Like?
The silverfish has a unique appearance! Their bodies are flat, elongated, and slender, tapering toward the rear. Their scales make them appear fishlike, and they have tiny bristle combs along their backs. They have long, slender antennae and those little wing-like structures they’re so famous for. They ‘chew’ with mouth parts for eating their favourite foods.
What Is the Life Cycle of Silverfish?
Silverfish enjoy cozy spots! They also tend to nest under protective cover, in decaying logs or beneath leaves. They thrive in warm environments, becoming less active when the temperature drops below 13°C, and can’t survive much above 40°C, so you’ll also find them indoors, in roof cavities, subfloors and wall voids as they love to hang out near heat sources and water.
What Is the Natural Habitat of Silverfish?
These little dudes sure are hungry! They are partial to proteins, carbohydrates, and flour, starch, sugar, glue, fabric, and linens. Interestingly, silverfish can survive for extended stretches without eating and typically don’t feed until the end of their third life stage.
Pest Status
Silverfish feed on small amounts of human food, but they make a mess as they do so, leaving behind scales and droppings. They may also damage a clothing, book and other paper-based products while they are in search of starchy material such as glue or wallpaper. Also, they can stain your linens yellow. Adult silverfish and nymphs (younger silverfish) are both regarded as pests.
Strengths vs. Weaknesses of Silverfish
Strengths: Silverfish are fast and quick, capable of eating many kinds of food and living in various environments especially in and around humans. They tolerate cooler temperatures, even.
Weaknesses: They have difficulty climbing smooth surfaces, so they’re prone to getting stuck in things like bathtubs. Since they like dark, hidden spots, it’s worth checking to make sure your prized possessions, such as books, aren’t being invaded and perhaps keeping them in places less friendly to silverfish.
Pest Control Treatment
Don’t worry! Silverfish are included in our general pest control services. We’ll give them a thorough spray, dust roof voids and subfloors, and construct both internal and external barriers against these more serious pests. As well as removing any food sources that could be luring them in.
